Cost-Saving Refurbishment At NHS Meridian House

Refurbishment and re-modelling work at a mental health centre in Keighley, West Yorkshire has been carried out by Bradford contracting, manufacturing and shopfitting company PEC.

Airewharfe Community Mental Health Centre is based in Meridian House on Bradford Road. The refurbishment aimed to upgrade the facilities used by the centre, where sound transfer between meeting rooms was a problem.

As principal contractor PEC managed all the works on site, installing new flooring in the clinical waste rooms, soundproofing insulation above the ceilings, new doors and frames, and specialist plumbing equipment, as well re-configuring layouts to create more interview rooms. The team also recommended carpet cleaning rather than replacement in some areas, resulting in a welcome cost-saving.

PEC managing director Sohan Panesar said: “Our team carried out much of the work at night after the centre was closed, to ensure disruption to both staff and patients was kept to a minimum.”

Nigel Slack of project management practice Michael Eyres Partnership (MEP), who proposed PEC for the contract, was impressed by the quality of work during the project. He said: “It was a really tight programme and the brief was not to affect the Health Trust staff who were working there.  PEC really rose to the challenge and the team on-site were fantastic. The project was on time, to a good quality and under budget – great job!”
